Unlevel Pegging

I didn’t get the internship. I didn’t really expect to. What I did expect was a fair chance. The day of my interview, I was told that they had already had someone in mind for the internship and that my interview had only been a formality. No other feedback and no apology. Just that. I worked out my two weeks’ work experience, for the experience and for the reference. I enjoyed it for the most part. I can’t say I didn’t, and I can’t say it won’t look hot on my CV. I can say, though, that I expected to be on a level footing with the other candidates. They could have just said to me, “we don’t have any spots available but why don’t you come in for some work experience anyway?” I would have said yes. The charade, the pretence, are what really get to me. Being teased with the ghost of a chance.
