Poem

In Theory

I would put on my own
life jacket first
take the mask,
sate my thirst for oxygen first
and then help you out after

when we reached the cold water
we’d both stay afloat,
wait for the boats
and hold hands
‘til the rescue arrived

in reality, though
I’m deprived of my breath
trying to save you from death
with my head going light

my hands fumbling
with your jacket
and too late, I’ll come to realise
I can’t keep you alive.
